my mom

my mom has a japanese bitter orange (poncirus trifoliata) tree growing in her back yard.
she took me out there the day after thanksgiving to gather some up for making pomanders with cloves.
the thorns on this are lethal!
in the end, she gave the tree trunk a nudge with her foot to shake the little oranges loose.
then we gathered lots of little rosebud-shaped pinecones from her neighbor's hemlock tree.
she disappeared for awhile, and came back with these shaggy pinecones.
this was her favorite sweet little happy pinecone.

these flowers, roses, snapdragons, feverfew, and dill, were still untouched by three nights of frost.
pink is my comfort color, just as cinnamon toast is comfort food.
gathering these bits of beauty was balm.  missing my friend and summer.
