my friend joe

is joe pie weed beautiful or what?
i think of it as summer's lilac.
he and anne stroll along the sides of country roads together everywhere this time of year.
queen anne's lace, anemone, rose hips, mint, elderberry, plum foliage, and ninebark foliage.

i purchased this vase at tjmaxx today.  to me it looks like the lichen-covered rocks we have around here.

i was working with these flowers yesterday, too, but my vase was driving me nuts - the stems kept popping out!
i had bronze snapdragons and a few orange gomphena in it too, but my son suggested it just had too much going on.

i like both of them!

burdock and bittersweet

sticker burrs and stranglers in the garden,
tame and interesting in the bouquet

can you see the hooks on the ends of the bracts of the flower?  they were the inspiration for velcro.

my mom made this box out of old tree bark.  isn't it awesome?

lily white

oh, so whyte, oh so soft,
oh so sweet, so sweet,
so sweet is she.
ben johnson - have you seen but a whyte lillie grow?

i know you are supposed to pinch off the stamens on lilies so the pollen doesn't stain the petals,
but their color and graceful shape is the finishing touch, i think.

i have a story about the quotation i used above-
a long time ago i made birth announcements for lots of clients.
one of them had a daughter, and they named her lillie, and requested that lovely passage by ben johnson.
it is still in my head as one of the prettiest tributes to a baby girl.

this is another pie-inspired bouquet.
every thursday i bake 2 pies.  this is probably the only thing i do routinely.
baking always gets my brain in a good place.
anyway, here's the blueberry bouquet
hydrangea, wild monarda, claryssa sage, dianthus, ninebark foliage

i really wish i had a blueberry bush; i'd put in a few stems right there at the bottom

here's the pie process

i use both wild and cultivated blueberries, and cut butter into the sugar, flour, salt, lemon zest base

snapdragons are ready!
you wouldn't believe how much i anticipated this day.
my grandmother got me on to them.
i love my memory of a yellow snapdragon bouquet on her table.
and her instruction of how if you pinch the neck of a floret, it snaps at you.
and their fragrance!
this year i decided to grow the chantilly snapdragons, a butterfly variety.
i got the seeds from a company i discovered this year and recommend highly-

indeed, these are fire-breathers without the neck pinch

here's a chorus
