rose hips

see the lovely stars, how they shine

these flowers, roses, snapdragons, feverfew, and dill, were still untouched by three nights of frost.
pink is my comfort color, just as cinnamon toast is comfort food.
gathering these bits of beauty was balm.  missing my friend and summer.
with mallow leaves

sunday soothsayer

i'd picked these before the frost friday night.   the last hurrah of dahlias.
farmer's almanac says it is going to be a very cold winter.
judging by the number of wooly bear caterpillars, it is going to be a very cold winter.

 white wood aster

so start the nestling....
get the down comforters out to air, pull down the storm windows, put the hoses away.
and be sure to put the leaves on the compost heap.

cha cha

these tomatillos are growing in my compost heap.
i was so happy to discover them there because i have almost nothing to use for greens any more!

we had our first bit of frost last night, and sadly, some of the dahlia leaves have blackened.
more cold nights are predicted, so soon we'll be saying good bye to these beauties.  :(

for kevin doyle

a floral lament for a friend.

i knew kevin for only a year, but he was in my heart every minute, in every good song.

seagull you fly across the horizon into the misty morning sun
fly to your tomorrow

he played this song, seagull, by bad company almost every week at open mic at our local pub.
i remember the night of this recording;  i had a splitting headache and felt a little disconnected.
but it's the only video recording so i am posting it.

i made a lemon cake
and put an icecube dahlia on it.
there's a round piece of wax paper between the cake and flower.
this is so you can see the size of it!
my son has our camera in texas.  thanks to maddie and sarah for camera and iphone shots!

lorna's garden

my friend, lorna, has a huge rosebush still loaded with these big mid-pink roses.
the zinnias and verbena are from her beautiful garden, too.

one of her construction guys held this for me so you can see the bouquet size
